Duplex Steel Plates: Everything You Need To Know

Duplex Steel Plates (short form of Duplex Stainless Steel) are the widely used products in most of the applications. It is a unique combination of high strength, hardness and excellent corrosion resistance. This is a result of its metallurgical structure which consists of two phases i.e., austenite and ferrite. This special structure provides better strength and enhanced corrosion resistance property than stainless steel and mild steel.

Chemical composition of Duplex Steel

20-28% Chromium (Cr), up to 5% higher Molybdenum (Mo), up to 9% Nickel (Ni), and 0.05-0.50% Nitrogen (N)

Stainless Steel v/s Duplex Steel Plates

The main difference between duplex steel and stainless steel (SS) is in their chemical compositions. The duplex has higher chromium (up to 28%) and molybdenum contents than that of SS containing only 11% chromium and lower molybdenum.

The higher the chromium content, the higher the yield strength. Thus, this difference in the composition makes duplex-grade steel better corrosion-resistant material than stainless steel. Though both the materials have similar toughness and durability, the former has higher resistance levels to chloride stress corrosion and chloride pitting corrosion and twice the stronger than the latter.

Super Duplex v/s Duplex Steel Plates

Super duplex, as the name implies, is superior than Duplex Steel Plates because of the higher contents of Cr, Ni, Mo, N and even W which endorse the formation of intermetallic phases, making it more resistant to impacts and stronger than duplex steel.

Features & Properties

1. Excellent resistance against corrosion, intergranular corrosion, chloride pitting, stress corrosion, cracking.

2. Due to high chromium content, Duplex Steel Plates can withstand high temperature of 300°C and above.

3. Machinability & weldability

4. High tensile strength and yield strength

5. Highly durable than other types of stainless steel

Specifications: Size, width, length and thickness

The Duplex Steel Plates are usually heat treated at about 1100-Degree C to 1250-Degree C. They are also annealed in order to enhance their properties. The final surface finish options include hot rolled, cold rolled, satin, etching, embossed, sand blasted, hairline, and other

They are available in various lengths such as 2000mm, 2440mm, 2500mm, 3000mm, and 6000mm. The thickness of the plates varies from 4 mm to 100 mm, and the width varies from 1000 mm to 3500 mm.

Area of Application

Duplex Steel Plates are used in widest range of applications, ranging from industrial to chemical. Besides, they are also used in automobile, chemical processing units, chemical trucks, architecture, construction and building industries, etc.

ASTM A240 Duplex 2205 Plate is mostly used in food processing equipment, packaging equipment, pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment, offshore oil drilling industry, petrochemical industry, power generation plants and others, while the grade Duplex Steel JIS SUS S31803 plates is extensively used in the pulp and paper industries.

All the grades of Duplex Steel Plates are manufactured, tested, inspected and verified in accordance to the national and international quality standards to ensure optimum strength and structural property required by vast industries
