316 Stainless Steel Sheet: All-In-One Information

Why is it called Stainless Steel? What differentiates it from simple Steel? Well, a basic fact states that all steels have basic carbon & iron composition, but stainless steel (SS) also contains chromium – the alloy which enables SS to feature corrosion resistance.

But, there’s more to the stainless steel, called the branches i.e., different grades of SS material. And, the most common is 316 Stainless Steel. Its products, like 316 Stainless Steel Sheet is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel with an addition of molybdenum. It is widely used product around the world due its magnificent properties, such as corrosion resistance.

Features & Properties

316 Stainless Steel Sheet is an improved version of 304 SS, with an addition of higher nickel content & molybdenum. In result, it offers increased corrosion resistance in corrosive environments & the molybdenum content ensures stress cracking, pitting & crevice corrosion in acetic acid vapours, sea water & chloride-contaminated media.

It has higher strength & offer creep resistance at elevated temperature as compared to 304 SS sheet. This material also possesses excellent mechanical properties, like tensile strength (580 psi), elongation (55 MPa), hardness (165 MPa), yield point (25,000 psi) & endurance (260 MPa). It allows fabrication, cold working, hot working, welding & machining, thus making it an ideal material for most of the applications.

Stainless Steel 316 Sheet also goes through surface treatment, like 2D, 2B, BA, NO.1, NO.4, NO.8, 8K, chequered, mirror, hair line, embossed, sand blasting, etching, brush, etc. to ensure impact resistance, increase its properties & durability.

Area of Application

316 Stainless Steel Sheet finds it extensive use in vast applications as it is the most common stainless steel besides 304 Stainless Steel. 316 SS sheet is used in:

1.      Automotive trim

2.      Household appliances & items, like cookware

3.      Stamped Machine products

4.      Food processing equipment

5.      Trailers & railway

6.      Chemical & petrochemical industry

Types of 316 Stainless Steel Sheet

Nonetheless, 316 Stainless Steel Sheet varies in types:

1.      316L Stainless Steel which has low carbon content & resistant to grain boundary carbide precipitation (sensitisation). It is useful for heavy gauge welded components.

2.      316Ti: It has better resistance to elevated temperatures ranging from 600 to 900 °C.

3.      316N: It has higher strength than 316 SS.

304 V/S 316 Stainless Steel Sheet

According to what industrialists & analysts state, these two material grades of stainless steel sheet are the most common used around the world. The major difference between 304 Stainless Steel Sheet & 316 Stainless Steel is the chemical composition.

In a nutsheel, 316 SS contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum, while 304 SS contain 18% chromium (Cr) & 8% nickel. Hence, due to the addition of molybdenum in 316 SS, it has superior corrosion resistance, chloride resistance, high tensile strength, weldability & formability, than 304 SS.

Additional Information: Tests & Packaging

After series of tests, the 316 Stainless Steel Sheet is obtained. Such as tests include, positive material identification (PMI testing), chemical analysis, mechanical testing (tensile, reduction of area & elongation), hardness test, pitting resistance test, intergranular corrosion test, hydrostatic test, radiography test, ultrasonic test, impact test, flattering test, & other tests.

To ensure high-level product safety, 316 Stainless Steel Sheet is supplied in protective packaging items, among which are following:

1.      Shrink wrapping

2.      Boxes & crates

3.      Carton boxes

4.      Wooden Pallets
