As much hygiene is important in-home, it is widely practiced in medical facilities. Keeping in mind the need of maintaining a safe surrounding for people, doctors emphasize the use of a Disposable Hypodermic Needle. This sharp needle is detachable; it is fixed on to the top section of a syringe for two main purposes:
1. To supply medicinal liquid or fluid into the vein or under the muscle of a patient for treatment purposes.
2. To extract body fluid (blood, tissue or cell)
A Disposable Hypodermic Needle is a thin and hollow tube with a sharp tip that makes it easy to penetrate through the skin. It is the most common needle used in medical facilities, nursing homes and clinic across the world to either deliver a liquid medicine or to extract blood from the body.
It is always used in combination with a syringe, which consists of a sliding plunger inside its cylindrical tube. When this sharp needle is fixed on to the given port in the syringe, the plunger inside the syringe body is pulled back to draw in a liquid drug. Then the needle is inserted into the skin while the plunger is pushed in to deliver the medication into the body, under the skin.
Is Disposable Hypodermic Needle reusable?
The Disposable Hypodermic Needle is only intended for single-time use and for one patient only. As it gets in direct contact with the patient’s body fluid, like blood and tissue, it is necessary to dispose it after one-time use to prevent cross-contamination.
It is non-reusable for infection control, hospital hygiene maintenance, and safety of patient. It comes in direct contact with human blood, tissues and infection, and must therefore be discarded after one-time use. They must not be reused as it has potential to spark cross-contamination.
Material of Construction
A Disposable Hypodermic Needle is typically made from a stainless-steel. The tube is made through a process called as tube drawing – the process in which the tube is formed through dies to make the sharp needle.
Size of Disposable Hypodermic Needle
It is available in different sizes that are measured in Birmingham gauge (G). The smallest size of the needle is 33-G with diameter 0.159 mm and the largest size is 7-G with diameter 3.810 ± 0.076 mm. The size varies from 7-G to 33-G.
