304 SS has lower iron content which makes it non-magnetic. It develops a golden-coloured surface over time, after being exposed to heat. While, 409 SS has higher iron content which makes it magnetic & it will develop rusted surface over time, after being exposed to heat. This rusting can be cleaned with a wire brush.

In a nutshell, 304 SS has better corrosion resistance property than 409 SS, but is comparatively expensive. The former can last for minimum 10 years & the later has the lifespan of 8-10 years. 

Properties & Features

• Heat resistance: Grade 409 SS plate offers resistance at high temperature up to 815°C during intermittent conditions & up to 675°C during continuous process.
• Corrosion resistance: It can resist atmospheric corrosion, but is likely to has mild corrosion.
• Heat treatment: Annealing of 409 SS is carried out at 790 to 900°C temperature range. Thermal treatment doesn’t lead to the hardness of plate.
• Welding: It needs to be pre-heated at 150 to 260°C temperature before welding. It features excellent weldability & formability properties
• Durability: 409 SS plate has the lifespan of at least 8 to 10 years.
