Induction
motor is used most commonly in electronic devices. In Induction
motor the rotor rotates on the principle of Electromagnetic
induction.

Symbolic representation of Induction Motor |
When
we are giving supply to the stator winding , flux will generate in
the coil due to the flow of current in the coil. The flux from the
stator will cut the coil in the rotor and since the rotor coil are
short circuited, according to Faraday's law of electromagnetic
induction , current will start flowing in the coil of the rotor. When
current will flow another flux will get generated in the rotor. Now
there will be two flux & one is stator & another is rotor flux due to
rotor flux, rotor will feel a torque which will make the rotor to
rotate in the direction of rotating magnetic flux.
Applications
Induction
motors unit is used in approximately in 85 % of the industrial applications, due to
their high quality.
Recently
in electric vehicles field their is a lot of analysis. Induction Motor are not so common in city, as in their application has permanent magnet
synchronous motors (PMSM) for better efficiency. It can be Used
in: Fans, blowers, escalators, refrigerator, high speed trains,
Electric Vehicles etc. Because of the simplicity of use, rugged
nature and efficiency is what making it to carry more workload.
Types
There
are basically two types
of induction motor & that depend upon the input supply - single phase induction motor and
three phase induction motor. Single phase induction motor is not a
self starting motor and whereas three phase induction motor is a
self-starting motor.
Single
phase motors have various starting arrangements. Capacitor start motors are probably the most common. There are also permanent split capacitor motors, shaded pole motors and others.
By
far, the most common type of three phase motor is the squirrel cage
motor, but there are also wound rotor motors (also called slipring
motors). Squirrel cage motors have different torque & speed design types.
